Its hard to illustrate all the countries we cover with case studies, in fact there are few countries in EMEA that we have not successfully recruited for, so these are more to give you a flavour of what we have done and how, rather than where or in which specific segments. This one had been a thorn in the side of the Division and HQ Management for some time. The VP wanted international candidates, and specifically with emerging markets expertise in Asia, Latin America etc. not just Western Europe. It’s a tough job to fill since it is a functionally responsible role for a large global Division (1.8bn sales and 11 subsidiaries, 20+ Plants and R&D Centres), without the direct line disciplinary authority. You still have to meet the targets though, welcome to matrix management! We found a shortlist of international candidates from competitor groups, on time and on brief, with a range of nationalities and language skills. One was selected, hired, repatriated and has subsequently been promoted. Everyone was happy (until the crisis (: – actually the ID is still in place and running an Op Co in an Emerging Market now, he said he’s confident it will all pan out ok and “see you on the other side!”).

We’re having problems with this one, actually we have already tried a search which has failed they admitted, how are we going to get someone with the cultural and language mix to win with the local Korean partners and meet our exacting internal standards? How will you do it without a Korean office? Well, fortunately, a lot of this is simply about hard work and making the calls, something we are very happy to undertake for our customers. There isn’t any cloak and dagger or mystery to making connections and extending a network, even in Asia. Of course we have a Consultant who has worked 10 years for an Asian Automotive Group, which helps as well. Within 6 weeks we had a shortlist of bilingual Western Europe / Korean candidates from Automotive, who spoke excellent English, and one was selected. Job done.
